Ghanaian musician Kweku Flick has come under intense criticism on social media after suggesting that his music is receiving greater support from outside Ghana than from his home country.
Although the comment appeared to be an expression of frustration and appreciation for international recognition, it quickly sparked a debate among Ghanaian music fans.
Some critics accused the “High” hitmaker of overlooking the support he has received from Ghanaian fans throughout his career. Others reminded him that local fans, DJs, bloggers and music enthusiasts have consistently promoted and celebrated his work.
For some fans, the issue was not Kweku Flick appreciating international support but rather the suggestion that support from outside Ghana is louder than that of Ghanaians.
However, others came to the musician’s defence, arguing that his statement reflects a wider challenge faced by Ghanaian artistes. According to this school of thought, local musicians sometimes receive stronger recognition and opportunities after gaining attention internationally.
The conversation also gained momentum after fellow Ghanaian musician Yaw Tog appeared to share a similar sentiment, referencing the popular saying that a person may not always receive the highest level of appreciation in their own home.
